Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings

There is a lot of music out there, although it is fairly rare that you find something new and old at the same time.  That's the best way I can describe Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings.  They always play together, typically under the name "Gillian Welch" or "The Dave Rawlings Machine." Gillian has my favorite voice on the planet, and Dave plays a 1935 Epiphone Olympic guitar like he's possessed by it.  He is the greatest guitar player I have ever seen live, and I've seen Jack White.  They are professionals of the trade and have never, ever, ever made a bad song.  Ever.  Seriously.

Dave Rawlings has produced and written for  Bright Eyes, Ryan Adams, and Old Crow Medicine Show (that band that originally played "Wagon Wheel" on an album, which was written by Bob Dylan and then covered by everyone and their mother).  Gillian helped to write and was featured on the "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack, which gave her a bit of fame at the time, but her music really speaks for itself.

I once saw them play for 3 hours straight, without a break, or any indication that they had been playing for that long.  I made some sun tea with a fun ingredient before the show, which was opened by an 18 year old Sarah Jarosz - she had a halo over her head the entire time (I'll cover that whole story in another post). When Gillian and Dave took the stage it was a feeling I'm sure folks feel when they get saved at church - and it was all perfect.  I'm not sure they are human, but I like to think so - it would mean I got something in common with them.

Here is a live concert from the early(ish) days: The first song is I Want to Sing that Rock and Roll and the entire concert is wonderful. It makes me feel like what Zoloft should make me feel like.
